How can I fix a frozen pipe safely without causing damage?

You can thaw a frozen pipe safely by relieving pressure and warming the pipe slowly. Do not use an open flame.

  • Turn off the home’s main water valve, then open nearby faucets to drain pressure.
  • Warm the pipe with a hair dryer or warm towels, starting near the faucet and moving toward the ice.
  • Keep electrical tools dry and use GFCI-protected outlets if available.
  • Watch for leaks or cracks as it thaws. If it bursts, keep water off and call a plumber.
  • We handle frozen pipe repairs in Wilmington and Tinley Park.
