What should I do first when a circuit breaker trips in my home?

Start by turning the tripped breaker fully OFF, then back ON to reset it. Unplug or switch off devices on that circuit, and restore power one item at a time. If the breaker trips again immediately, stop and call a licensed electrician. Do not tape a breaker on, and do not use higher-amp fuses. Frequent trips can point to an overloaded circuit, a short, or a faulty GFCI/AFCI. We troubleshoot in Lake Forest and across Chicagoland the same day.
